Representation matters (Interview with Tiana Bautista // DE+ENG)
Die 22-Jährige, geboren und aufgewachsen auf Hawaii, zelebriert ihre koreanischen und philippinischen Wurzeln in ihrer Kunst. Durch ihre magische Art in der Pinselführung hebt sie dabei die Schönheit aller Frauen hervor. Seit die Künstlerin sich zurück erinnern kann, hatte sie eine Passion für das Malen und fand ihren Weg zu den sanften Wasserfarben vor ca. 7 Jahren. Ihre Kunst nimmt einen mit in eine surrealistisch angehauchte Dimension, in der mit natürlichen Elementen die Wichtigkeit von Repräsentation groß geschrieben wird. Seit jeher verwendet Bautista emotionale Bilder von Models als Vorlage für ihre Porträts. Durch die Darstellung versetzt man den Betrachter in dessen Gefühlswelt und kreiert ein empathisches Vorstellungsvermögen. Das Internet stellt dabei nicht nur die Quelle der Fotovorlagen dar, sondern sorgte ebenfalls für die Intention der Künstlerin: „I really want others to celebrate their diversity“. Denn bei der Recherche nach Models eröffnet sich meist ein eurozentrisches Schönheitsideal. Im Laufe ihrer Karriere wuchs Bautista durch ein enormen Mangel an Repräsentation im Glauben auf, dass ihre Hautfarbe und ihr Gesicht nie Kunst darstellen könnten. Sich selbst in ihren eigenen Werken nicht wieder erkennen zu können, kreierte eine große Unsicherheit. Doch genau dieses Gefühl ließ sie realisieren, wie tiefgreifend sie das falsch vorgelebte Schönheitsideal verinnerlicht hatte und wie gravierend der Mangel an Repräsentation ist. Dementsprechend nutzt Bautista ihr großartiges Talent, um BIPoC eine Plattform zu geben, mit dem Willen den jungen Frauen zu zeigen: Ihr seid alle bewundernswerte Meisterwerke! Das vorherrschende Schönheitsideal muss demontiert und weibliche Vielfalt gerühmt werden. Die Bilder, wie das von Alyssa Lau, porträtieren den einzigartigen Anmut jeder Frau auf berührende Weise und erlauben durch ihre Farbführung und den irrealen Aspekt in das Dargestellte einzutauchen. Der Kontrast zwischen der dargestellten Frau und den surrealistischen Elementen lässt sowohl das Model als auch Bautistas Kunst auf besondere Weise aufleben. Diese Powerfrau verwendet Vernetzungen und Challenges, wie die „Draw This In Your Style“, um ihren Still immer mehr zu verfeinern und neben ihrer jahrelangen Erfahrung weiter zu wachsen. Dabei sorgt sie in jedem Kunstwerk durch die akzentuierte Verwendung einer ähnlichen Farbfamilie für einen besonderen Fokus. Die pointierte Darstellung lässt das Bild aufleben. Trotz des verwendeten Surrealismus, ist es doch sehr realistisch dargestellt, sodass die Künstlerin es schafft Wind und Wetter ihres Bildes zu vermitteln und spüren zu lassen. Eine unglaublichen Ausführung mit einer doch sehr wichtigen Botschaft. Ihre Darstellung ist ein bewundernswerter Mix, bei dem sich jede Betrachtung lohnt!

The 22-year-old, born and raised in Hawaii and now living in California, celebrates her Korean and Filipino background in her art. Through her magical style in brushwork, she highlights the beauty of every woman. Ever since the artist can remember, she has had a passion for painting and found her way to soft watercolors about 7 years ago. Her art takes you into a surrealist-inspired dimension, using natural elements to emphasize the importance of representation. Bautista has always used emotional images of models for her portraits, and through the visualization she tries to put the viewer into a feeling where one can empathize with the portrayed woman. The internet is not only the source of the photo templates, but also provided the intention of the artist: "I really want others to celebrate their diversity". While researching for models, you usually encounter an Eurocentric ideal of beauty. Throughout her career, Bautista grew up believing that her skin color and face could never be considered art due to an enormous lack of representation. Not being able to recognize herself in her own work created an insecurity within her. Yet this very feeling made her realize how profoundly she had internalized the falsely exemplified ideal of beauty and how serious the lack of representation was. Bautista uses her magnificent talent to give BIPoC a platform and to show women: You are all admirable masterpieces! The prevailing beauty standards must be dismantled and female diversity must be praised. The images, like the one of Alyssa Lau, portray the unique grace of each woman in a touching way, allowing to immerse oneself in what is portrayed through the use of color and the unreal aspect. In a special way, the contrast between woman and surreal elements brings both the model depicted and Bautista's art to life. This powerful woman uses networking and challenges - such as the "Draw This In Your Style“ - to continue to refine her style and grow alongside the years of her experience. In doing so, she provides a special focus in each artwork through the accentuated use of a similar color family. The pointed rendering brings the image to life. Despite the surrealism used, it is still very realistically depicted, which transmits a feeling for the wind and weather. An incredible execution with a very important message. Her paintings are an admirable mixture that are worth every sight!
